How to Enable and Customize Dark Mode in Notion

Enable and Customize Dark Mode in Notion

Notion is a productivity tool that is used by millions of people around the world for organizing their work and personal lives. It is a versatile application that can be used for note-taking, task management, project management, and much more. Notion is known for its clean and modern user interface, but sometimes working in bright light can be tiring for the eyes. That’s where dark mode comes in. Dark mode is a feature that allows users to change the interface of an application from a bright background with dark text to a dark background with light text. This makes it easier on the eyes, especially when working in low light conditions.

Enabling dark mode on desktop:

  1. Open Notion and click on your profile icon in the bottom left corner.
  2. Select “Settings & Members” from the dropdown menu.
  3. In the “General” section, toggle the switch for “Dark mode” to the right.
  4. Notion’s interface will now switch to dark mode.

Enabling dark mode on mobile:

  1. Open the Notion app on your mobile device.
  2. Tap on your profile icon in the top left corner.
  3. Select “Settings & Members” from the dropdown menu.
  4. In the “Preferences” section, toggle the switch for “Dark mode” to the right.
  5. Notion’s interface will now switch to dark mode.

Note: Enabling dark mode on mobile will depend on the operating system of your mobile device. In some cases, the option to enable dark mode may be found in your device’s settings rather than within the app itself.

Customizing the dark mode in Notion:

Notion allows users to further customize the dark mode interface by changing the background color, text color, and accent color. Here’s how:

  1. Open Notion and click on your profile icon in the bottom left corner.
  2. Select “Settings & Members” from the dropdown menu.
  3. In the “General” section, scroll down to “Theme”.
  4. Click on “Edit” next to “Dark mode”.
  5. Here, you can customize the background color, text color, and accent color by clicking on the corresponding color swatches.
  6. Once you’ve made your desired changes, click on “Save”.
  7. Notion’s dark mode interface will now reflect your customizations.

Note: Not all elements of Notion’s interface can be customized. The customizations you make will apply to most parts of the interface, but some elements may still remain the default color.

Creating a custom dark mode toggle:

Notion doesn’t have a built-in toggle to switch between dark mode and light mode. However, you can create a custom toggle using Notion’s databases and toggles feature. Here’s how:

  1. Create a new database by clicking on the “+” icon in the left-hand sidebar.
  2. Choose “Table” as the database type.
  3. Add two properties: “Name” and “Dark mode”.
  4. In the “Dark mode” property, select “Toggle” as the property type.
  5. Add two entries to the database: “Dark” and “Light”.
  6. Click on “Filters” and select “Dark mode” as the filter property.
  7. Toggle the switch to “Dark” to enable dark mode, and toggle it to “Light” to disable dark mode.

Benefits of creating a custom toggle:

Creating a custom toggle allows you to quickly switch between dark mode and light mode without having to go through the settings menu each time. It also gives you the flexibility to choose your own terminology for each mode (e.g. “Night mode” instead of “Dark mode”). Additionally, the toggle can be shared with other users in your workspace, allowing them to easily switch between modes as well.
